BIBLE READING|1 SAMUEL 12:1-13
The election of a new District Superintendent during the annual convention of a popular Pentecostal Church in the Eastern part of Nigeria in the 90s led to the split of the church. The popular and preferred candidate, Pastor Matthew, senior pastor of the district headquarter church did not win the election. Matthew was a very popular and wealthy lawyer. He bankrolled the construction and equipping of a new district church building. He had a lot of swag among the city brethren. The election was won by another Pastor, Emeka who pastored a smaller church in another part of the district.
Within 5 years of arriving in the district, he planted 12 churches. The converted and discipled brethren from the churches voted massively for him. The District split, and Pastor Matthew became the leader of the splinter District. Five years down the line, the splinter District fired Pastor Matthew for sexual immorality and mismanagement of church
resources. The leaders returned to join Pastor Emeka.
In our bible reading today, Samuel was sent to go anoint a King for Israel after Saul was rejected by God. Jesse was to produce the King from among his 8 boys. The charisma and stature of the first 3 almost swayed Samuel but God halted him – vv. 6 -7. David, the 8th son was brought in reluctantly by Jesse his father. On sighting David, and without any ceremonial cleansing Samuel was instructed to anoint him. God taught Samuel a lesson in His protocols. Does your church elect or appoint people after God’s heart or men’s heart? – Luke 16:15
