DIVINELY CONNECTED BY GIVING

JUNE 4|FRIDAY
BIBLE READING|LUKE 21:1-4

Several years ago, I attended a Christian Fellowship where brethren made annual financial pledges to support the work of the fellowship locally and nationally. There was this elderly woman, a petty trader, who was known to have always visited the bank in her neighbourhood to exchange all her meagre earnings in coins and dirty currency notes into
crisp mint notes in readiness to give at this annual event. The Regional Chairman of this Fellowship who presided over this event took notice of the enthusiasm of this woman each year.

Time came that a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) was to give some grant to low income earners at the national level of the Fellowship. Each Regional Leader was requested to send two names. The Regional Chairman remembered this petty trader and sent her name. The grant changed her life for good. Her giving gave her divine connection to favour.

In today’s bible reading, Jesus watched the rich men cast their gifts into the treasury (vv. 1-2). He said nothing about the rich men; but of the poor widow he had this to say: “Of a truth, I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all” (vs. 3). Just like the Lord watched and weighed the rich men, and the poor widow, the Regional Chairman would have watched and weighed the petty trader. She must have thought in her mind, “I cannot give coins and dirty currency notes to my God…” She got divine connection to Jesus and commendation with it.

PRAYER: Father Lord, let my giving raise me to eternal significance before you.
